On 1 August 1964, the call sign of the ‘Mayak’ radio station was broadcast for the first time — a musical phrase from Vasily Solovyov-Sedoy’s song ‘Evenings in the Moscow Region’. ‘Mayak’ became the USSR’s first round-the-clock news and entertainment radio station. Its original format, known as ‘five on twenty-five’, consisted of five minutes of news and twenty-five minutes of music. Over the years, the ‘Podmoskovnye Vechera’ call sign was broadcast more than a million times, a feat that even made it into the Guinness Book of Records.
